QUILT PLANNING NOTES · UPDATED OCTOBER 26, 2026
Quiltler or a local quilt design studio?
Want to try fabric combinations quickly, or keep a complete design on your own computer? Those are both reasonable goals. Choose an app by following a quilt from first sketch to the cutting table.
Written by the makers of Cloth & Colour, a desktop quilt designer in development. Our preview is not yet available for public purchase or download. This is a product comparison, not an independent ranking. Other product names belong to their owners; no affiliation is implied.
Start with what Quiltler already does
Quiltler’s website describes a browser quilt designer with an iPhone/iPad companion, custom blocks, fabric photos and stash tools. It offers a free browser start without an account or card, while paid features include pattern output, yardage, cutting information and full templates.

Try a real stash problem
Choose two solids, one small print and one large print from your cupboard. Photograph the large print with a known measurement. In the app, crop out the table and set the repeat scale. Make a simple layout and inspect it both close up and at a distance.
Now swap the large print into only the centre pieces. Do the surrounding triangles stay unchanged? Can you undo a mistaken click immediately? These small interactions matter when you are changing dozens of blocks.
Check the handoff to the sewing table
Ask for a plan of that same quilt. Can you tell which numbers are finished dimensions and which are cutting dimensions? Are templates different from placement diagrams? Can you reprint one needed sheet without printing the whole book?
Print one template at actual size, measure the calibration marks and sew a sample block. Software yardage is still an estimate. Directional prints, matching motifs, prewashing and cutting errors can affect the amount of fabric you need.
When Quiltler makes sense
If you want to begin in a browser today, or want its mobile companion, Quiltler is a sensible product to try. Do not wait for an unreleased desktop app just to test an idea that another product can already help you explore.
Cloth & Colour may appeal if you prefer local files and offline core designing. It is not an iPad editor, and we do not promise editable import of Quiltler files. Our planned US$79 launch / US$99 regular purchase covers the purchaser’s own Mac and Windows computers; release and platform checks remain.
Quiltler descriptions checked against its linked website on October 26, 2026. Free and paid feature boundaries can change.
